Name: Kayanna Grace Sanders

Ethnicity: Inuit/German-American
Species: Meta-human
Blood Type: A-
Astrological Sign: Virgo
Birthstone: Sapphire
Gender: Female
Sexual Orientation: Bisexual
Past/Bio:

Kayanna Grace Sanders was born to Koda and Elizabeth Sanders in Lansing, Michigan. She only has one sibling, an older brother named Kyle. The family are very close and live a relatively normal life outside of superhero antics.

When Kayanna was seven years old, she found out her father was Nighttide, a new hero who joined the superhero business in 2002. Not too long after, she was told her grandmother, Anyu, was a member of the All-Star Squadron and the Justice Society of America in the late forties/early fifties under the guise of Cascade, which makes Kayanna a third generation superhero. Her parents initially withheld this information from Kayanna due to the girl being a rather talkative child. They weren't sure she could keep a secret this great, so they waited until she was a bit older.

Ecstatic at the thought of being related to not one but two superheroes, Kayanna was dead set on becoming a superhero herself. With a vivid imagination, she’d often be seen running around the house, imagining herself with the abilities Nighttide possessed, calling herself 'Nightfall'. She even went as far as to persuade- force- her brother into playing the villain as she chased him around.

Just three years later, when Kayanna was ten years old, her own powers came into play, developing when she started puberty. The girl was incredibly excited and Koda- who was kind of hoping neither of his children would develop powers- begrudgingly began to train her in the basics of her powers to ensure that she could properly control them, and therefore not potentially give away that she comes from a family of supers at school. Kayanna believed this to be the start of her superhero training, however, Koda had no intentions of taking on his daughter as a sidekick or allowing her to become a superhero.

In the summer of 2005, Kayanna’s mom, Elizabeth, received a job offer at Gotham General as an anesthesiologist, so the family packed up their bags and moved to Gotham. Koda took a job at Gotham Academy as a history professor, his subject primarily focusing on various wars. Kyle started at Gotham Academy while Kayanna attended Hilltop Elementary before transferring to Gotham Academy when she started 7th grade a few years later.

Kayanna never gave up hope that one day she could become a superhero, and her pestering increased significantly when Robin showed up on the news, and even more so as other young heroes made their appearances in the media. Koda knew the risks of being a hero and didn’t want to see his only daughter- his “baby girl”- get involved in the life and potentially get hurt. Anyu attempted to persuade her son that, under his mentorship, she would be okay, but Koda stood firm and still said no.

Eventually, after months of pestering by not only Kayanna, but Elizabeth and Anyu to give the girl a shot, Koda caved and allowed his daughter to become his sidekick. In May of 2010, Kayanna finally made her official appearance as Nightfall, though her being a superhero was a trial and error basis.

Seeing as she was still so new to the whole thing, Nighttide kept Nightfall on a relatively short leash and though all the protégés had been invited to the Hall of Justice as a first step to joining the League, Nighttide opted to not bring her because he felt she wasn’t ready. However, on that day, Nighttide was called in by Batman to help dethaw civillians that Mister Freeze had frozen in Gotham Park. Initially he wasn't going to let Nightfall come along, but she managed to persuade him- it was going to be an easy task anyways. Shortly after saving the civillians, Nighttide was called in to join the Justice League in stopping Wotan from blotting out the sun. Since it was an emergency that put him on a time crunch, Nighttide made the decision to take Nightfall to the Hall of Justice, where he had been told the other 'sidekicks' were hanging out. It was faster to zeta her to the Hall than it was to take Nightfall home, as Nighttide was weary about allowing his daughter to make the trip back home by herself (it was a 15 minute motorbike ride from their house to the park, and longer by walking). The League needed him, so he didn't have much choice.

Taking her to the Hall of Justice was supposed to be a safe place, and he figured there was no harm in her interacting with other heroes her age. He was wrong, and Nightfall ended up tagging along with the others when they split for Cadmus.

After her escapade to Cadmus with the other proteges, Kayanna almost lost her privilege of being Nightfall and a superhero. Koda tightened her already short leash, causing a slight rift in the two's relationship.

Seeing and hearing about the success of the team (and some prodding from Anyu), Koda eventually allowed Kayanna to join the team.

Hydrokinetic Lore:

Based on what she has been told by her grandmother, Kayanna and her families abilities can be traced back to an Inuit tribe that was located in northern Canada (around Baffin Island) a few centuries ago. As the story goes, the first person to have these abilities was a fisherman by the name of Tarkik. One night, Tarkik was out doing some night fishing during a full moon on Baffin Bay when a sudden storm rolled in. The storm caused massive waves that capsized Tarkik's boat, leaving him to face the wrath of the sea. Just before drowning, Tarkik claimed to have seen a bright blue light, and then suddenly he found himself with the ability to control the water, effectively saving his life. It's believed the Inuit God of the Moon, Igaluk, gave Tarkik these abilities, and that is why future generations that had these abilities found themselves strongest at night/during a full moon.

Though the ability seemed to spread through various Inuit tribes in the area as generations passed, these tribes suddenly began to vanish one by one, the people included, for no reason. No trace was ever left of these tribes, and a few people, including Kayanna and her family, are all that is left of Tarkik's descendants.

It is initially believed Kayanna and her ancestors were meta-humans, but after Kayanna was kidnapped in s2 and experimented on by the Reach, they discovered Kayanna didn't actually have a meta-gene. After her release and the confirmation of her lack of a meta-gene, Kayanna approaches her grandmother, Anyu, and the two try and figure out what this means.

More on this as I develop it.

About Him/Her

Personality:

Curious | Stubborn | Kind | Compassionate | Self-Conscious | Immature | Overbearing

Kayanna walks the fine line of being an extroverted introvert. She enjoys making new friends and is relatively easy going, but she often finds it hard to be the one to initiate a friendship, and the other person is usually the one that has to make the first effort. This changes as she grows older, and she becomes more extroverted, easily introducing herself and finding new friends in unique places. Kayanna's laid back nature allows her to get along with just about everyone.

Even when on the more introverted side, its never taken Kayanna long to warm up to new people and friends. Once you get to know her, she is a very outgoing and lighthearted person who enjoys cheesy jokes and puns. She's also known for being sarcastic, inserting witty quips here and there where it fits. She can be almost clingy and overbearing to those she cares about and loves, and sometimes has a tendency to forget personal space in regards to those she is comfortable.

Like most people, Kayanna enjoys being well-liked by people. If she finds out someone doesn't like her, it can bother her and she'll overthink things, sometimes even going as far to figure out why someone dislikes her, which can alienate that person more. She grows out of this mentality as she gets older, learning that what other people think of her shouldn't play a part in what she thinks of herself, and her confidence grows immensely between season 1 and season 2.

Kayanna is a natural-born leader, full of passion and charisma. Her knack for leadership grows and develops as she becomes a stronger and more confident hero. Her quick thinking and intuitive nature allow her to be a strong role model and leader, and it also makes her adept at coming up with plans to get the job she was delegated done. She finds joy and pride in helping to lead people, however, she doesn't like being the sole leader, preferring to work alongside or under another, stronger, leader. Kayanna is very reliable and when tasked with something, will always pull through.

A stubborn attitude presents itself in the form of arguments and sticking up for what she believes in, even if it goes against the status quo. She won't hesitate to speak her mind, and is tolerant of most opinions- even if they differ from her own. However, her tolerance has limitations, and she won't hesitate to call someone out on the BS if their opinion can negatively effect others (IE: racism, homophobia, etc).

Kayanna is also a fiercely compassionate and loyal person, almost to a fault. She always believes in those she loves and is consistently there for them when they need her, providing them a listening ear and emotional support. However, where she finds it easy to be there for those who open up to her, she finds it hard to open up to most people, only have a select few people (like her mom, Barbara, etc) she truly feels comfortable opening up to. In an effort to seem strong and resilient, she can bottle up her emotions until she's ready to break.

Hobbies:

  • Sign Language:
    • Kayanna developed a fascination with the language when she was in elementary school. A kid in her class was Deaf, and they had an interpreter. She begged her parents to learn ASL. At the time her parents couldn't afford actual ASL lessons, but they found her different books to start her off. She soaked up the language like a sponge, and when her family moved to Gotham, her parents were able to get her actual ASL lessons. When annoyed, Kayanna resorts to signing her annoyance at someone.
  • Collecting Pressed Pennies:
    • One of Kayanna's favorite souvenirs to collect from vacations and trips is pressed pennies. She makes sure to get at least one from every single place that she visits, like zoos, aquariums, amusement parks, etc.
  • Dance:
    • When Kayanna was younger, she started off in gymnastic classes. The place she started gymnastics at got rid of their gymnastics program due to funding issues, but they still had a dance program, and Kayanna shifted into that. This lead to her love of dance, a passion she keeps up with throughout her life. Her dance skills even translate into battle, and she's a member of the dance team at Gotham Academy.
Fears:
  • Losing those she loves:
    • As cliche as a fear as this my be, it's one of Kayanna's greatest. Growing up, she had always been surrounded by friends and family, and she's never suffered a great loss of a loved one (her mom's parents passed away before she could truly know them). This fear has caused her to be a bit overprotective of her friends and family, and even a bit clingy towards them.
  • Claustrophobia/Myelinophobia:
    • Due to her powers being heavily movement based, Kayanna has a fear of tight spaces and being bound. This prevents her from using her abilities and makes her feel helpless. As she gets older and becomes less dependent on her powers, these fears begin to decrease.
  • Geese:
    • A slighting on the more irrational side of the spectrum fear, Kayanna is terrified by geese. After being chased by one while feeding some ducks when she was younger, she does her best to steer clear of these vicious birds. If she's walking in a park or by a pond and happens to see a flock, she will turn and run in the opposite direction, or if she's with someone, she'll place that person between her and the geese.
  • Medusa:
    • Another one of her irrational fears, Kayanna is terrified of the mythical being (much to Dimtri's annoyance- who always tries to stick up for Medusa). After learning about Medusa in school, Kayanna was tortured with nightmares about the women turning her to stone and destroying her, subsequently leaving her with a fear (more of a dislike really) towards Medusa.
Strengths:
  • Leadership skills:
    • Kayanna is a natural born leader, it just took her a few years to grow into this mindset. In the field she's very level-headed, as well as driven and focused, allowing her to be an effective leader. Despite her ability to lead, she has never wanted to be the leader of the team, as she prefers to either co-lead alongside someone else, or to leader under a stronger leader.
  • Defense:
    • Kayanna's strongest skill with her powers is her ability to use it for defense. She's a strong defensive player, using various water constructs to block and deflect attacks- either from herself or a teammate if they are otherwise occupied.
  • Listening:
    • Kayanna is always ready to provide a listening ear to those who may need one, and listens with no judgement.
  • Nighttime/Full moon:
    • For reasons not fully understood to the waterfam, their powers are the strongest at night/during a full moon. Something about the moon seems to strengthen their abilities, and this dates back to the lore of the first 'waterbender' in their ancestry.

 Relationships

Father:

  •  Koda Sanders
    • The two sometimes have rather rocky and complicated relationship. As his only daughter, Koda is on the more overprotective side of things when it comes to Kayanna, which causes some slight resentment for him on her part. Her stubbornness nearly matches his own, which causes the two to sometimes butt heads here and there, mainly when it comes to superheroes. Overall, the two have a strong relationship and Kayanna greatly looks up to her father. When not in the field, their relationship is more easy going and lax, the two often joking with each other and making playful jabs. In the field, however, their relationship is much more serious and Koda is more firm and strict with his daughter, as he just wants to make sure she stays safe and understands the seriousness of being a superhero. Obviously Kayanna inherited her powers from her father, with the two having the same basic hydrokinetic abilities, however, Koda developed a hydrokinetic subset power where he is able to create water portals. These water portals have limited range, however, and the farthest he can 'travel' with them is 50 feet. He mainly uses this ability to travel around a battle field and get behind enemies.
Mother:
  • Elizabeth Schneider:
    • Elizabeth is Kayanna's rock and the two have a very strong relationship. Though Kayanna is sometimes closed off when it comes to talking about her feelings, she finds it easy to open up to her mother, and often turns to her for advice. Elizabeth is also the one who acts as a buffer when Kayanna and Koda get into more heated debates. They enjoy similar activities, and always try to take at least one day during the week to do one of their favorite activities (like shopping, playing games, working on puzzles, etc).
Siblings:
  • Kyle Sanders:
    • Kayanna won't admit it, but she loves her brother to pieces. He often annoys the crap out of her, but that's what older brothers are for, right? The two are known to tease each other and 'fight', as well as spend a fair amount of time watching movies/tv and playing games. Being close in age range, the two share friends and do have a close relationship. When they were younger, Kyle was jealous that Kayanna got powers and he didn't, but as he grew up, he moved beyond that jealousy and became content with the fact he didn't have powers. He saw the toll and stress being a hero and having powers took on his father, and later on his sister, and knew that even if he had those powers, he probably wouldn't have been a hero. Kyle and Kayanna's relationship gets kind of shaky after Kayanna joins the team, as he sees his sister less and less and it takes a toll on their relationship.
Relatives:
  • Grandparents:
    • Anyu Tatkret and Jacob Sanders (paternal)
      • Anyu:
        • Kayanna has a very strong relationship with her grandmother. Anyu has always had her back whenever it comes to Kayanna being a superhero, and she did her best to help convince her son to let Kayanna join him in the field- and later the team. Anyu recognized the importance of Kayanna being surrounded by heroes her age, as way back in the day, being a part of the JSA truly helped Anyu. Anyu is also teaching Kayanna Inuktitut, as well as other Inuit traditions and lore. Anyy also shares the hydrokinetic abilities her sons and Kayann have, though her power subset is water healing. Anyu eventually passes her mantle of Cascade onto Kayanna.
      • Jacob:
        • Jacob is a lighthearted and easy going guy, and he loves to spoil his grandchildren, whether its with money or sweets. He's immensely proud of not only his wife and her abilities/contributions to society as a hero, but of his son and granddaughter as well. Whenever Jacob comes over to visit, Kayanna loves to play chess and checkers with him, as those are his favorite games. Their relationship is good, but it deteriorates slightly as Jacob gets over and dementia sets in. Kayanna's more than happy to step up and help take care of her grandfather, but she also hates seeing him deteriorate.
    • Daphne and Peter Schneider (maternal)
      • Kayanna never really knew her mother's parents, as her grandma passed away when she was born and her grandpa when she was only two years old. Her mother speaks fondly of the two, often sharing stories of them, and Kayanna wished she could've had more of a relationship with them.
  • Aunts:
    • Nila Sanders (paternal):
      •  Kayanna and Nila aren't all that close. They get along fine and Kayanna loves it when her aunt comes to visit, but they don't see each other that often, as Nila lives across the country in Taos. There she works for S.T.A.R Labs and helped with the Erdel Initiative, which helps maintain the League's zeta tubes. Nila is easy going and mischievous, and when she comes for visits, she loves telling embarrassing stories about her little brother, Koda, which Kayanna holds onto to tease her father with after Nila is gone.
    • Mary Beth Kennedy (maternal):
      • Kayanna is closer to her aunt Mary Beth, who she was able to grow up with while her family lived in Lansing. It was Mary Beth that instilled the love of baking into Kayanna, and when she comes to visit, the two make a mess of the kitchen before filling it with baked goods. Mary Beth is also her godmother, and often sends Kayanna pictures of her dogs and cats.
    • Diana Prince (honorary):
      • As the only girls in the All-Star Squadron and JSA back in the day, Anyu and Diana became close friends. This close friendship back in the day allowed Diana to have a close relationship with the Waterfam, Kayanna included, when she returned to the mainland in 2001 (though it was a few years later Kayanna learned Diana was Wonder Woman). Kayanna has great admiration for Diana and the powerful and commanding presence she carries with her wherever she goes. When asked, Kayanna can quickly list Diana as one of her greatest role models.
  • Uncles:
    • Desna Sanders (paternal):
      • Desna and Kayanna don't have much of a relationship, as her father and Desna don't really get along. As the oldest brother, Desna always believed he would gain his mother's powers and thus carry on her legacy, but when Koda got the powers instead and he got none, an animosity built up between the two. It escalated when Koda revealed he had no interest in heroics when his powers first manifested (a mentality that obviously changed when he got older). The only time Kayanna sees her uncle is Christmas time, as Anyu forces all her of her kids and their families into her house to celebrate the holiday.
    • Kenai Sanders (paternal):
      • Kenai is Koda's youngest brother, only about a year younger than Koda. As such, the two have a strong relationship and Kenai lives in Gotham, where he routinely visits Koda. This gives him a good relationship with Kayanna as well, who loves when her uncle comes to visit. He often refers to her as 'Trouble' and pokes fun at her, though as she gets older, she teases him as well. Like her father, Kenai also has hydrokinetic abilities, however, his hydrokinetic subset power allows him to turn into water vapor and travel small distances. Because of this ability, when Kayanna's hydrokinetic subset power manifests as the ability to turn herself into water, Kenai is called in to try and help her with this ability. Kenai never had a desire to become a hero, and mainly uses his powers in private.
    • David Schneider (maternal):
      • Like her mother's sister, Kayanna has a good relationship with her uncle Dave. He's a jokester and is always filled with stories, often able to talk about anything and everything for hours on end, which Kayanna is usually more than happy to sit back and listen to. Dave will also sneak sweets to Kayanna and Kyle behind their mothers back, often before they're supposed to have dinner. Kayanna and Kyle also have to teach him the ways of the cell phone.
Best Friends:
  • Barbara Gordon:
    • Barbara was Kayanna's student liaison when she started at Gotham Academy. The two instantly clicked and were fast friends. Kayanna admires Barbara and her mischievous nature, as well as how mature the girl is for her age. Barbara quickly became one of Kayanna's confidants, and she had no hesitation in showing Barbara her powers and telling her about her heroics. Kayanna would later play a role in helping Barbara become Batgirl. Kayanna views Barbara as a sister.
  • Artemis Crock:
    • The air of confidence Artemis seemed to always carry with her is both intimidating and inspiring to Kayanna. The two's friendship began to develop once Artemis started at Gotham Academy, and learned that Kayanna also attended the school. She was initially put off and hesitant at getting close to Kayanna, not wanting for her secrets to be revealed. Kayanna never questioned why Artemis was attending Gotham Academy, which allowed the girl to feel more at ease with opening up to Kayanna.
  • Dick Grayson:
    • Kayanna was introduced to Dick through Barbara, and the three were instantly inseparable. Dick's jovial and fun-loving personality clicked with Kayanna's own, and the two were always up for trying new and different things, with Barbara begrudgingly tagging along. Kayanna has no hesitation when it comes to getting math help from Dick, and is more than happy to take advantage of him for this. When Kayanna joined the team, Robin initially was going to be distant while Dick remained close, but then he found it hard for him to stay away from Kayanna as Robin, because as a hero, she was more confident and outgoing, and he liked seeing that side of her, so he started to distance himself a bit as Dick. Kayanna also has a bit of 'denial' complex when it comes to Dick being Robin, despite being close to both (think Louis Lane), so though she sees the similarities, she doesn't believe her friend Dick can be Robin.
  • Kaldur’ahm
    • Kaldur and Kayanna bonded over their similar power sets, and Kaldur wondered if Kayanna and her family abilities could be traced back to Atlanteans. Kayanna looks up to Kaldur as an older brother, and finds him easy to talk to when she needs advice. They often team up in the field together, combining their aquatic abilities for stronger attacks. The two also train together a lot, sharing different moves with each other and teaching each other new things. Kayanna also enjoys teaching Kaldur about 'surface world' things that he doesn't know much about.
Friends:
  • Jayce Mallory:
    • Kayanna met Jayce at a small park down the road from her house during one of the rare times she went jogging. Not too long after Kayanna runs into him again at Gotham Academy, where he had just started school at. The two are partnered up together on an English project, and during this time they get to know each other better. Jayce is one of the few people who has the uncanny ability to make Kayanna smile when she's in a foul mood. He also enjoys sending her 'memes' and dumb puns whenever he finds them and is the epitome of the 'dad' friend.
  • Zatanna Zatara:
    • As someone greatly interested in magic, Kayanna was eager to befriend Zatanna. The girl's confidence and mischievous nature slightly intimidated Kayanna upon their first meeting, but her easygoing and friendly nature drew Kayanna in. Zatanna would also flirt with Kayanna, but since the girl had little experience with crushing on someone of the same gender, Kayanna only took Zatanna's flirts as compliments and they became close friends. Kayanna found herself enjoying Zatanna's more rebellious and mischievous attitude, and secretly wished she could be more like her friend. As their friendship progressed, Kayanna slowly began to realize and understand that she was starting to have feelings for the magician.
  • Wally West:
    • At one point in time, Kayanna thought she might have a crush on Wally. Kayanna is very easily flustered by Wally's flirting, which often causes her to clam up and become unresponsive for a short period of time. As she enjoys baking, Wally is Kayanna's guinea pig whenever she tries to make new recipes. He's also doing his best to teach her how to play video games, a feat her brother hadn't been able to accomplish. Wally's another person who can easily cheer Kayanna up, and she loves spending free time with him.
  • Dimitri Spiros:
    • Dimitri is Kayanna's 'mom' friend. As the first female 'sidekick', Kayanna looked up to Nightlight, but when they first met at the Hall of Justice, her excitement at meeting the girl was diminished by the 'arrogant' attitude Dimitri seemed to be. In reality, however, Dimitri was looking out for Kayanna, a less than experienced hero, and wanted to make sure she stayed safe, and Kayanna inflated the caring side of Dimitri into something negative in her mind. When in costume, Kayanna finds Dimitri's serious demeanor a bit intimidating to work alongside, but she also finds she tries harder to improve herself and succeed when she has to work alongside Dimitri in the field. Outside of heroics, Kayanna enjoys talking to Dimitri about their ethnic backgrounds, each sharing stories about their Inuit and Greek ancestry respectively. Kayanna also loves to poke fun at Dimitri and how bad the girl is when it comes to making puns and jokes. Later on, when Kayanna and Dick start to date, they'll often go on double dates with Dimitri and Wally.
  • Conner Kent (s2):
    • After moving past her dislike/fear of Conner, Kayanna and Conner became close friends. She was there for him after his break-up with M'gann. They often team up in the field, Kayanna provided defensive cover and distractions so Conner can move in on the offensive. Kayanna relates strongly to Conner's feelings of being stuck in the shadow of their respective mentors.
Love Interest:
  • Zatanna Zatara:
    • Kayanna developed a crush on Zatanna shortly after the girl met/joined the team, though she didn't understand it as such. Since Zatanna was the first girl Kayanna ever had a crush on, it left the girl incredibly confused. The two get together at the end of season 1, Zatanna kissing Kayanna at midnight on New Year's after they saved the Justice League. They're a very playful couple, and Zatanna can easily put a plush on Kayanna's face. They date for almost a year before feelings change and they go their separate way, but they still manage to be friends and Kayanna is there every year for Zatanna when she gets to see her father.
  • Dick Grayson:
    • Kayanna's romantic involvement with Dick is rather complicated at times. Dick was the one who crushed first, developing feelings for Kayanna that only grew stronger when she joined the team. Kayanna never really developed feelings for Dick, but for his counterpart, Robin, instead. She's attracted to his lighthearted and teasing personality, as well as his quirkiness, and she admires how he can balance a playful personality in the field with being an amazing hero. Kayanna and Robin get pretty close during season 1, and its a bit before Zatanna shows up that she realizes she has feelings for him. Once Zatanna shows up and she develops feeling for the magician, she's left incredibly confused about her feelings. However, before the end of season 1, Dick's secret ID is revealed to Kayanna, and all the trust the two had built is crushed, and her feelings for him significantly dampened as hurt from him keeping this secret from her settled in. This helps push Kayanna towards Zatanna. Eventually Kayanna is able to forgive Dick for the whole secret identity thing, and the two become friends once more and the trust is restored. They date other people until finally getting together a year before season two starts, a few months after the loss of Tula. Together the two are a strong couple, very affectionate in civvies while on the team, for secret identity purposes, they keep that they are dating a secret. There's a lot of flirting that goes on between the two, and they can be rather competitive towards each other as well. Things are going pretty well for them, until Kaldur 'betrays' the team and Artemis 'dies'. Dick elected to not tell Kayanna about the plan, hoping to protect her and spare her worries and stress. However, Dick neglected to think about the emotional toll seeing his girlfriend broken would take on him, and confesses to her about the whole thing a few months before season two ends. Kayanna is devastated by this revelation and kicks him out, citing that she needs time to think about things. Once they retrieve Kaldur and Artemis from the Light, Kayanna breaks up with Dick, their trust having been broken once more. She breaks all contact with Dick, and when season 3 starts, the two are still broken up and on rocky terms.
  • Jayce Mallory:
    • Jayce developed feelings for Kayanna sometime during their sophomore year at Gotham Academy, but he never acted on them because he could tell she was into Dick Grayson. Shortly after high school, he moved across the country for college, only returning after a few years. Between season 2 and season 3 he moved back to Gotham, and the two reconciled. Kayanna and Dick had been broken up for a few months, and as the two started hanging out and talking more, Kayanna began to develop feelings for him. The two dated for a while, but then Barbara became paralyzed, and Kayanna got tied up in her recovery and was put back in contact with Dick, old feelings resurfacing. She ended things with Jayce on a rocky note, and the two aren't really on friendly terms anymore.

  • The Team:
    • Kayanna joins the team just before the mission to Bialya. As a member of the team, she tries her best to prove that she deserves her spot on the team, and that she wasn't just allowed to join because her dad was a member of the League. The team truly becomes her second family and they mean the world to her. It's one of the few places where she can truly be herself.
  • Justice League:
    • As the team works under the Justice League, Kayanna obviously has a relationship with them. She looks up to many of the League members, specifically Wonder Woman and Black Canary.
Team Mates: Robin, Kid Flash, Aqualad, Nightlight, Artemis, Miss Martian, Superboy, Zatanna, Rocket, etc
Mentors: Nighttide
Allies: The Team
Enemies:
  • Bombsquad:
    • Bombsquad is an up and coming villain who has been making trouble for Kayanna and her father. Though not a meta-human like his water foes, Bombsquad is a master demolition experts, utilizing fire and explosions to counteract Kayanna and Koda's water.
      • More info revealed in due time.
  • The Pyro's:
    • The Pyro's, led by someone named Agni, are a gang in Brooklyn. They target various locations throughout the area, robbing them before burning the building down, which acts as their 'signature'. They resurface every few months, and wear headbands with a fire insignia on it.
  • Superboy (s1):
    • Not so much an enemy per say, but Kayanna doesn't have a favorable opinion of the clone in season 1. She was slightly traumatized by him in Cadmus when he knocked the others out before knocking her out as well. She was further traumatized by him during Bereft, when he attacked her again after they all lost their memories. As season 1 progresses, the two's relationship begins to become more positive as Kayanna gets to know Superboy outside of Cadmus and his anger. This 'enemy/dislike' mentality is mainly on Kayanna's end, as Superboy is more indifferent to her than anything, though he is slightly annoyed by her when she makes offhanded comments about him.
Powers and Abilities:
  • Hydrokinesis:
    • Kayanna has the ability to control and manipulate water. With this manipulation, she is able to use water as a means of protection and offensive. She can also manipulate water in its three basic stages: solid, liquid, and gas. Though Kayanna could use her sweat as a means of water, she is unable to create water.
  • Hydrophysiology:
    • Kayanna has the ability to turn herself into water. She discovers this ability a few years after her initial hydrokinetic abilities developed, and this is her 'subset' power, with each member of her family that develops hydrokinetic powers having a unique subset power. It took Kayanna a few years to master this ability, as it takes great concentration for her to maintain her water form. Once mastered, she can shift between her normal and liquid form with ease, eventually being able to drop into a puddle as well. This form is limited to liquid water only, and she has no ice or steam form. In this form she is also unable to bend water normally, and cannot merge with a puddle or some other form of water to increase her size.
  • Acrobatics:
    • As a gymnast and a dancer, Kayanna is rather lithe and spry. She's very agile and flexible, using her gymnastic and dancer capabilities on the battlefield to easily move around, as well as using these moves to help her control water in a more fluid fashion. Her acrobatics are also incorporated into her hand-to-hand combat style.
Weaknesses:
  • Lack of water:
    • Kayanna is significantly weaker and less of a threat when she doesn't have a source of water, which is why she always carries a pouch on her. Though she's not rendered helpless without water, she feels more comfortable with a water source to use and control.
  • Lack of limb movement:
    • If unable to use her arms or legs- due to being bound or temporary paralysis- Kayanna cannot bend/control water as freely as she normally would.
  • Heat/Fire:
    • Though physically heat/fire doesn't have much of an impact on Kayanna, heat/fire can limit her water sources. However, too much heat/fire can potentially harm and/or kill her if she is in her liquid form.
  • Human Weaknesses:
    • Even though she would be classified as a meta-human, Kayanna is still also human. As such, she's not as durable as some of her teammates and can suffer injury easily if not careful.
Weapons:
  • Bō staff:
    • To counteract those times when Kayanna lacks water, Dick Grayson gave her a bō staff after her first mission with the team, where she lacked water and wasn't much help. She trained with the bō staff and became rather adept at using it. She can also use it as an extension of her powers. When not in use, it's attached to the back of her belt in its collapsed form.
Transportation: The zeta tubes, her motorcycle
